Review (written and provided by Sinko):
It was my first Spin Doctors show since the reunion tour, and they were indeed a different band. When I saw them in 01, they were a much looser group, jamming a lot more. Now they´ve tightened up all their arrangements, allowing for fewer unscripted moments but still a fun show. They opened up with What Time Is It, and I was disspointed to see that they ditched the jam at the end. Then they played Nice Talking To Me, which was neat but seemed to lack energy. After that they went into a couple new songs, I believe it was My Problem Now and Happily Ever After.
At this point of the show I was starting to wonder about the future of the Spin Doctors and thought that perhaps I like them for the wrong reasons. I am a fan of the Doctors for the funk and for the improvisation in the group – and these two songs lacked both of these. They´re not bad songs by any means, but they´re little pop ditties, which doesn´t appeal to me at all.
They played a couple other new songs – Sweet as Honey and I´d Like To Love You But I Think You Might Be Crazy – which were very cool. Sweet as Honey had an introduction in 7 and a funky verse, and I´d Like To Love you had a great extended guitar solo.
They closed with Two Princes and encored with Genuine, Yo Momma´s a Pajama, and Big Fat Funky Booty. All very cool songs but they haven´t changed much – with the exception of Genuine.
All and all it was a cool show and had some very good moments. I miss the extended jams however. And the new songs seem pretty hit and miss. Hopefully by the time the album comes around they´ll have some more hits.
By the way, if anyone saw me, I was the kid in the black sweatshirt yelling obnoxiously for Cheeseburger Deluxe, and later, House all night.
