Review by JohnGris (originally posted on SD message board):
“It was a really good if not great gig, but a strange crowd. They were kinda young-ish and….well, I can´t figure out a way to say it nicely. Lots of shouts for “Freebird” during every set, many ignorant comments during Akon´s set (“Are you from Somalia!!?”). Getting the gist? People seemed more hung up on Chris´ patented goofy dancing and unselfconscious, laid back aura, not to mention this 30 year old fan jamming like crazy and singing along to all the old songs that they didn´t know too well. Unfortunately, the order of the bands was correct…Akon and Hinder, not to mention Cheap Trick, were infinitely more popular among the crowd than the Doctors. That´s life!
Anyway, they played a short set really early. It was my first time seeing them since ´93 on the Alternative Nation tour, at the height of fleeting popularity. Since I have that unreal reunion show from ´01, I knew they would still sound tight. They played a high percentage of new songs, which I was excited about…was hesitant to buy Nice Talking to Me after getting burned bad by You´ve Got to Believe in Something and Here Comes the Bride, but all reports that their songwriting touch is back turned out to be right on! Some great grooves. Went ahead and ordered it this morning. Mark seemed to be having a great time, even if slightly bemused by the unconventional SD crowd. Aaron was his usual focused self behind the kit. Eric remains one of the most underrated talents…the funky heart and soul of the band´s sound. Chris sang great with his usual charm, humor, and facetiousness. He seems to be geniunely proud of the band and their work and it shines through in his performance. Lots of uncoordinated but enthusiastic dancing, which allowed me to relate to him and his music even more. Tongue They jammed with reckless abandon despite that the crowd wasn´t really willing to join them. In some sort of order, here is the set list. I can´t remember order of the songs, although they definitely opened with a kickin´ What Time Is it?, Little Miss was the 3rd song, and they closed with Two Princes.”
