Shownotes by Scott Bernstein:
This was one of those shows I couldn´t wait for when it was announced — my old favorites (and really my first entree´ into the Jamband world), The Spin Doctors on a bill with my recent favorite funk band, Ivan Neville´s Dumpstaphunk. I KNEW there´d be some collaboration since (and very few people know this) Ivan Neville was actually a member of The Spin Doctors for a year or so in the late 90s, and I was really excited to hear what they´d do…
The Spin Doctors are riding a new infusion of energy from their most recent blues-based album “If The River Was Whiskey”, sprinkling in songs from that album (which is itself a mix of “forgotten” tunes from VERY early in their career and newly-composed stuff), great takes on some of their best tunes (“Freeway Of The Plains”->”Shinbone Alley” and “Lady Kerosene” in particular) and the anticipated (by me) sit-in from Ivan Neville on keys for “Big Fat Funky Booty” (which he also added some vocals to) and “What Time Is It”, both of which he added excellent solos to (including some clavinet!).
The Spin Doctors wrapped up and then Dumpstaphunk came on (WITHOUT clearing off The Spin Doctors´ gear, a good sign for a pending jam session!!!)…This was the first time I´d ever heard of Dumpstaphunk playing a 2 night stand in NYC (even though I only attended this night) so they dug a little deeper into their repertoire (I´d venture to say that they saved most of their “best” tunes for night 2), and it made for a good night for fans like me, who have seen their standard setlist pretty often. Shaking the dust off by opening with “Shake It Off” and continuing with the very upbeat “Blueswave” and their super funky cover of Quazar´s “Funk With A Capital G” and their cover of Betty Davis´ “If I´m In Luck I Might Get Picked Up” (sung by the amazing Nikki Glaspie), Tony Hall (who mostly plays bass but also straps on the guitar for some solos) threw down some SMOKING solos in all 3 of these. Next up was the instrumental “Paper Chasin´ Britney” which segued through covers of “Papa Was A Rolling Stone” and “You Can Make It If You Try” before wrapping itself up.
Dumpsta brought things back to earth with excellent harmonies on “Water” and a tight, slower groove on the fan-requested “They Don´t Care” and wrapped things up with some slightly deeper, older cuts — “Everybody Want Sum”, “I Know You Know”, and “Dancin´ To The Truth” before leaving the stage to bring back the entire Spin Doctors´ band (except for Chris Barron, who apparently had already left) — gracing the stage with 3 bassists, 2 guitarists, 2 drummers, and Ivan on keys. To start the jam session, we got a TIGHT, rockin´ take on Led Zeppelin´s “The Ocean” with Nikki Glaspie (Dumpsta´s drummer) on vocals and a super extendo take on The Rolling Stones´ disco hit “Miss You”. Both of these were perfect fits for both bands (though in the beginning Eric Schekman [Spin Doctors]´s guitar was quite a bit too low in the mix…) — and the jams were amazing. No wonder the guys from Dumpsta said they´d like to jam with Spin Doctors again as soon as possible! Nikki also called out for a drum duet near the end of “Miss You” and it was truly great to hear how Nikki, who is a young explosive bundle of energy and Aaron Comess — long an established and precise funk drummer got along musically, neither one of them could have seemed to be having a better time!
