Review (by Gretchen, originally posted on the Spin Doctors Message Board):
“My husband and I went to the show last night. I´ve been to 5 other shows and had the time of my life at each one, especially when they played this bar, The Intersection, in Grand Rapids. I was beyond excited to take my husband to his first Spin Doctors show. I kept talking it up like it was going to be the greatest experience of his life. It´s funny. He absolutely loves NTTM but isn´t too much into their other stuff. For me, it´s just the opposite.
I wasn´t real excited that they were an opening band, much less for Hootie. I don´t really have anything against them, but I certainly didn´t want to hang around to see them. I wasn´t expecting much of a crowd for this show. I didn´t even know Hootie was still around, probably like how people don´t know the Spin Doctors are still around. I couldn´t imagine they´d fill the place up.
I was very wrong. There was a huge crowd at the show and they obviously weren´t there to see the Spin Doctors. Every now and then I´d notice someone into the music, but it´s the first time I´d been to a Spins concert where I sat. I wish I could have gotten into it more, but it was really hard when no one else was.
The performance itself was really good. They played a mix of the new album and PFOK. My husband really got into the new stuff, while I was jamming to Jimmy Olsen´s Blues and the like. But here´s a tip for all you concert-goin-fools… Don´t ever sit on the aisle if you´re there to see the opening band. Our seats were up close, but the aisle was right in my view and it was full of people trying to find their seats so I couldn´t see well much of the time. And there was an usher guy who was always in my way. […]
They did play one song I wasn´t familiar with right after Yo Mama when they introduced everyone. Chris said Mark is from Katy, TX, Aaron is from Dallas, TX, and Eric said he´s from Boston, TX, then Chris said he´s from New York City, TX. Chris was talking to some people up front in Spanish. Mark played the hell out of his bass. My husband dug Eric´s guitar and was really impressed with how high Chris gets his leg up.
If I´d never seen the Spin Doctors before I´d say it was an awesome show. But I have and I know how insanely fun they are live normally, but I just wasn´t feeling it this time. It´s not their fault. They´re just not suited to that sort of large, outdoor venue. I saw them at a very similar venue back in 94, and they rocked the house, but they were really big then and everyone there was excited to see them. This time the crowd made it hard to enjoy the show.”
